Romanesque
The Romanesque period lasted between 900 AD till 1200 AD. Many artworks included the events that had happened in Jesus' life, but also the colours became more bright and sculptures became more popular in this period. The material that the artist used to make their sculptures were usually metals, ivory and enamel. Gold became a big thing in the romanesque artworks as gold represented holiness,wealth and nobility. Most artworks were religious and used figures such as Jesus Christ, Virgin Mary, Prophets and other characters from the bible. These figures were usually depicted as unnatural looking.
During this era a major role that played in the romanesque period was feudalism (empire/kingdom/country ruled by a king). At this period the Pope had the most influential power that their status was higher than the kings. A mass amount of the European population were Christian and had devoted themselves to God and
A large amount of the population was Christian and devoted their lives to God. Many people went on pilgrimages to holy sites such as Jerusalem and Rome. Most large and wealthy cities were built around these holy sites. City planners were inspired by Roman architecture and cities grew around Europe.
This illuminated manuscript is about Mary Magdalen Announcing the Resurrection to the Apostles. In this period illuminated manuscripts were highly popular at this time. Churches would usually decorated with similar images. The image of Mary is depicted as her teaching the apostles. The artist who created it frequently used the colour gold to show divinity and richness in the artwork.
In this artwork Jesus is presented as a preacher, through Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Here they use a lot of gold and orange. They continuously focused the artwork on Jesus, one of the main things they always did to Jesus was to make his feet always point down as shown in this artwork.
