Contemporary art, is an art style that is associated from the 1970’s up until now, this very moment, in present time. The term ‘contemporary’ just means "art that has been and continues to be created during our lifetimes." In other words, contemporary to us. This art style is extremely broad and the concepts used are influenced by a great variety of subjects and themes, with some in relation to religion and Christianity.
Some of the main concepts that many modern artists portray through their artworks include social, cultural and political issues which are faced by societies around the globe. Also, rather than the artwork itself, artists tend to focus on the conceptual aspects of art and why it was created in that specific way, as well as its initial purpose. Various mediums and materials were used by artists to portray their artworks. These include oil on canvas, water colour, sculptures and acrylic on canvas to new and developed forms, such as mixed and multimedia, installations, and interactive artworks. Many contemporary artists use various art styles in order to portray their concepts. Surrealism, modernism, abstract art, traditional and appropriation are art styles which are commonly used by many abiding modern artists. Many artists choose to focus on different aspects of Jesus’ life as the basis, or main concept of their artwork.
In the modern society, various political, economic, social and cultural issues have arisen. Also, technology has developed greatly, and has influenced the way that we, as people work. Over the centuries the amount of people following Christianity had declined significantly. This is due to the fact that, scientology, and other theories about how the world and other aspects were created, were developed, and influenced the way that people thought, with them having to reconsider such matters. As well as this, Christianity is not so much promoted, anymore in today’s society, as it was in the past. Things in the world have developed so much, and have become so fast paced, that religion is one to be easily forgotten. In relation to the church, the amount of men, becoming priests have declined significantly over the past few decades. Because of this, there are less churches operating and holding masses.
The major decline had influenced how Jesus and many Christians were portrayed is various artworks. In modern society, it is not uncommon for Jesus to still be portrayed as a Middle Eastern man. Although this is the case, Jesus is however portrayed in different ways, rather than the usual, traditional concepts of Him being portrayed as a wise man, a caring and loving person, a reverend, the healer and the Good Shepherd. This has been appropriated to the views of common day artists. One of the most significant concepts used by modern day artists, that are in relation to religion and Christianity, is the crucifixion of Jesus which can be portrayed in many ways, according to the artists ideas. Using different techniques and styles, artists often use the crucifixion as their central concept and add in various symbols and objects to portray more surreal, abstract artworks, which emote feelings in the audience. These artworks require the audience to think and make the link between Jesus and modern society.
In the artwork, Jesus is depicted as in many forms. As mentioned previously, many people began to depict Jesus, using His crucifixion as one of their main themes. Many art forms have developed over time, and people have come to embrace each of them. Although the activity of these art movements have ended, people have adapted, and have used different techniques throughout the artwork to produce one which reflects fully on a certain theme. In this artwork, Jesus is depicted in many forms, using the art style of surrealism. He is viewed at from many angles, all centralising and focusing on one important aspect of His life, His crucifixion on the cross, and resurrection from the dead. Instead of looking at Jesus from general aspects, people have adapted from that, and have begun to depict Jesus in a new light, focusing on one aspect, and portraying it in such detail, from different points of view, which when combined, work extremely well.
