A style of art known as gothic developed in Europe during the Medieval period, around the time of 1100. It lasted for about 400 years, ending in 1500.
Gothic architecture transformed many churches, castles and cathedrals. The structure and styles of architecture developed due to the common problems in the Middle Ages. For the first hundred years during this period, building skills were limited. Gothic art solved many problems concerning architecture and made them more pleasant very special. One of the basic characteristics of architecture was the height. New building techniques provided architects to spread the weight of higher and taller walls. This was perfect for Cathedrals, castles and churches.
The topic on when the Gothic period began is still being discussed today, with some arguing that it began with Shakespeare,Chaucer or during the dark ages. Many others argue that the period started with the influence of Graveyard poets. This begun with Walpole's Gothic novel which was the major novel that identified itself as Old English. Gothic was the time of many skilled craftsmen, with other workers that had created the trade guild, they attempted to band together to protect their common interest. This was the time when two religions got brought up, the Franciscans and Dominicans.
